The Bjørlo Room
Stepping into Hafslund Manor’s magnificent rooms, filled with antique furniture and a bygone style, is like traveling back in time. Per Inge Bjørlo’s room installation turns this concept on its head, reversing the journey through time back to the present – powerfully, almost shockingly. Sit down, listen to your breath, feel your heartbeat, and absorb the room’s silence.
About the Artist and the Work
About Per Inge Bjørlo
The room was created by artist Per Inge Bjørlo in 2009. He is considered Norway’s doyen of installation art. His distinctive sculptures can be seen at many of the country’s major hubs and in important public spaces. You may have seen them: large steel sculptures with features of muscles, bone joints, and organic tension. Other sculptures are characterized by welded steel forms with sharp, flame-cut edges and industrial steel parts assembled into new shapes, often accompanied by machine parts from industry, industrial and black rubber, crushed mirrors, and glass shards. The materials are forced together, welded, hammered, or screwed against and into each other. Power and action, resistance and triumph are the overwhelming associations with his utterly unique style. The discomfort of our time and machine aesthetics, which can feel threatening and unpleasant, are transformed by Bjørlo’s hands into a present beauty. The art is both surprising and can take our breath away.
About the Room Installation "Hafslund's Bjørlo Room"
When the Reception Room was restored to its 1762 style in 2009, Bjørlo was given free rein here. In contrast to the opulence of Rococo, he created a modern sanctuary – a kind of “executive lounge” for small, private conversations or quiet reflection. Noise and colors are muted; calm and simplicity prevail. Listen to your heart beat, and encounter what you rarely allow yourself to.
As a total work of art from 2009, the room bears Bjørlo’s signature in everything: paintings, sculptures, clock, stoves, lamps, door handles, rubber flooring, chairs, tables, and candlesticks – all shaped by him. Specially selected chairs and video art enhance the expression. His sculpture “Utsyn innsyn” (View Insight), originally intended just outside the window, now stands in the Manor Park at the request of the Directorate for Cultural Heritage.
